Abstract
This study aims to analyze the reality of poverty in Algeria and its causes during the period (1999-2019) by examining the statistics of poverty rates, identifying its multiple causes, and exploring its effects on Algerian society based on economic and social indicators. The results revealed that at the turn of the millennium, poverty rates recorded relatively low levels despite achieving high growth rates, mainly due to the uptake of the benefits of growth as a result of the unequal distribution of wealth and income, high unemployment rates resulting from ineffective employment policies, and high inflation that created disparities in real incomes, which in turn led to a deterioration in living standards. The study concludes that eradicating poverty requires addressing school drop-out rates at the secondary level, increasing government spending on the education and health sectors, improving infrastructure, and achieving greater social justice by addressing the disparity in the distribution of development gains between rural and urban areas
