Natural gas and energy transition in Algeria: A national security issue

Abstract

In the face of the gradual depletion of fossil resources and rising domestic consumption, Algeria is grappling with a dual challenge: ensuring its energy security while successfully managing its energy transition. This article analyzes the central role of natural gas in this dynamic, both as a strategic resource for the national economy and as a vehicle for transition. It highlights the limitations of the rentier model, the constraints on the development of renewable energies, and the urgent need to diversify the energy mix. Energy security is approached here as a matter of national priority, requiring long-term structural choices.
